Artists Studio
Studio space for knitwear designer
Our client, knitwear designer Sasha Kagan, approached us with a brief to design and build a new studio to replace a 1980’s pre-fab cabin that was too cold in the winter and overheated in the summer.
Natural daylighting and work spaces with different qualities of light were a key feature of this productive space. The building has a south-facing glazed gable end which provides a diffuse light throughout the day - perfect working conditions that avoid the glare of direct sunlight onto a desk or workspace. |
The north facing gable is also glazed, providing a continuous even daylight throughout the day ideal for photography.
A trip to Japan was the inspiration for a building designed with with symmetry and balance in mind. A generous roof overhang with decorative rafters is a nod to the details found in Japanese timber architecture. This provides shelter for a cantilevered deck overlooking the garden. |
