About us

Origin Natural Building was born from a desire to create beautifully handcrafted buildings that reconnect people to nature and have a low environmental impact.

We are carpenters, architectural designers and natural plaster specialists who are passionate about craftsmanship and the environment.

Our core belief is that buildings should be healthy, warm and relaxing spaces to be in, with natural light and comfort that can inspire us and enrich our lives.

With considered design and natural materials a building can have a positive impact on our wellbeing and connection to nature.
We believe that a building should not separate you from the environment but embrace it.

Our projects are designed to respond to their surroundings, whether that be working to the principles of passive solar design, incorporating a living roof to create a new habitat, utilising natural light or accentuating a beautiful view.

Rowan Pickup

My journey started as a joiner's apprentice in Wales making bespoke doors and windows. I was captivated by the different varieties and beauty of timbers we worked with in the workshop. After 5 years of apprenticeship I moved to Bristol. I began to work as a carpenter and was keen to learn how to build the structures I had become so accustomed to making joinery for.  At the age of 27 I decided to pursue another avenue in the building industry and study architecture. After graduating I realised that I needed to take my own path and follow my dream of designing and building sustainable buildings with a close connection to clients and the environment.

After many years working in the construction industry, I craved more fulfilling work that would allow me to express my creativity.  In 2006, I became an apprentice carpenter in Bristol, beginning my journey on a path that has taken me through building houses and into joinery and furniture-making.  The possibilities for creativity are now endless.  Whilst working on a straw bale house, I was inspired by its beauty and simplicity, and impressed by the performance of the building. Equally fascinated by the science behind using natural materials, it was during this build that I started working with clay plasters and found my passion for this wonderful material I now love to use on our buildings.
